Most protesters want people to stop investing in companies that support Israel and the fighting in Gaza.
On Wednesday, announcements were made at UCLA telling people protesting to leave or they would be taken away by the police. The protesters stayed where they were and kept chanting in support of Palestine.
UCLA said that on Thursday and Friday, classes will be online instead of in person.
The leader of California talked about how police took too long to come help when a fight happened at UCLA. The fight was between a group who supports Israel and a group who supports Palestine. The fight started before the police got there.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay that the police took too long to help.
The police in New York City made some people who were supporting Palestine leave Columbia University.
State officials and university leaders say security guards went to the pro-Palestinian camp on Dickson Plaza quickly after fighting started late Tuesday night. Some people who saw it happen say the guards took a little while to get there, and there was a short time when no one was helping.
Trump said that protests on college campuses are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th. Biden is trying to stop fighting in Gaza to avoid criticism.
The police just stood at the edge of the grass and didn’t move when we asked for their help, said UC Divest at LA, a group that was part of the camp.
People who were upset started to go home two hours after the bad thing happened, and the police took charge on Wednesday.
Governor Newsom said that it’s not okay to be violent or break the law when you’re speaking your mind.
He said the people who did something wrong should be punished, like getting in trouble with the law, being suspended from school, or kicked out. The police at UCLA were outnumbered by the crowd and had to leave.
The newspaper said that more police officers from different places were called to help, and it took three hours to fix the problem.
Columbia University stopped some students from protesting.
There was a big fight at a popular university in the US late at night. It happened after police in New York made students leave a building they were protesting in at Columbia University.
Students at Columbia University are upset about what is happening in Gaza, so they are protesting. This has inspired students at other universities to do the same.
Many schools in different states are having protests where people are asking the schools to stop doing business with Israel and companies that are making money from the war.
The university people said they had lots of security to keep things safe, but they didn’t want to stop the mostly peaceful protests. Some people who support Israel came to campus in black clothes and masks and tried to take down the barriers.
Some people wearing masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with a strong spray, and ripped down their signs and boards.
People in charge of colleges are feeling more and more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because these protests are happening all over the country.
A group of people who support Palestine took over the area at Columbia University. The mayor of New York City said that some of the people who were arrested were not from the area.
