Most protesters want to stop supporting companies that help Israel and the war in Gaza.
On Wednesday, announcements were made at UCLA telling people protesting to leave or they would be taken away by the police. The protesters mostly stayed where they were and kept chanting in support of Palestine.
UCLA announced that on Thursday and Friday, all classes will be taught online instead of in person because of limited campus activities.
The leader of California was upset that the police took too long to help when a fight happened at UCLA between people who support Israel and people who support Palestine. The fight happened before the police got there.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay for the police to take so long to help.
Police officers in New York City had to ask some people who were supporting Palestine to leave Columbia University.
Government and school leaders say that security guards were quickly sent to the pro-Palestinian camp on Dickson Plaza after fighting started on Tuesday night. Some people who saw what happened say that the guards took a little while to get there, and didn’t show up right away.
Trump is saying that protests on college campuses are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th. Biden is trying to stop fighting in Gaza to avoid more political problems.
The police just stood at the edge of the grass and wouldn’t move even when we asked them for help, said UC Divest at LA, a group that was part of the camp.
Protesters started to go home two hours after the attack started, and the police took control on Wednesday, May 1st.
Governor Newsom said that it’s not okay to use free speech as an excuse to be violent or break the law.
He said that the people who did something wrong should be punished, which could mean they may get in trouble with the law, be suspended, or even kicked out. The police at UCLA were outnumbered by the crowd and had to leave.
The newspaper said that more police officers came to help from different places like California and Los Angeles. It took them three hours to make everything safe again.
Columbia University has stopped some students from protesting.
After police in New York kicked out some students who were protesting in a building at Columbia University, there was a big fight at another university in the US later that night.
The protests at Columbia about what is happening in Gaza have inspired similar protests at other universities in the country.
People are protesting at schools in many different states because they want the schools to stop doing business with Israel and companies that are involved in the war.
The people in charge of the university said they had a lot of security in the area, but didn’t want to stop the mostly calm protests. On Tuesday, a big group supporting Israel came in and tried to take down the barriers.
The people wearing masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with a stinky spray, and broke their signs and boards.
College leaders are feeling more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because they are happening more often in different places.
People who support Palestine took over Columbia University’s campus. The mayor of New York City said that some of the people who were arrested came from outside the city and were causing trouble.
